Serums: The Boost Your Skincare is Looking For
Serum’s have certainly found a place in our skincare world recently. These little bottles of potent, active ingredients are the addition to your daily routine that your skin has been crying out for. So what are they and why are they so worthy of a place on your bathroom shelf?
What is a serum anyway?
Serums are usually a water based (they can also be oil based) liquid or gel that are loaded with active ingredients such as Vitamin C, E or A, antioxidants or peptides. They are designed to be incorporated into your routine after you cleanse and before you tone and moisturise.
They are light and absorb quickly. This is because serums are usually made up of molecules that are smaller than those found in creams and lotions.
Why do I need one?
Serums leave out the fillers. Often you will find petroleum or mineral oil in the list of ingredients on the back of your moisturiser. These are no good. They work by keeping water from evaporating, but meanwhile will clog pores and are not eco friendly.
Even creams that are natural will be working to lock moisture in, but in the process they keep active ingredients from penetrating the deeper layers of the dermis.
Serums can help rejuvenate tired looking skin, smooth fine lines and aid cell regeneration. They can reduce break outs and greasy skin. They tone, increase elasticity and brighten for a youthful complexion. They're pretty amazing.
Do they help everyone?
They work well with most skin types, especially those with oily skin. People with broken skin, eczema or rosacea should caution serums as they will penetrate the skin even quicker and could cause irritation. If you have dry or mature skin, the serum will really boost the effects of a good, rich moisturiser.
But they’re so expensive!
True- they do cost a pretty penny and are most likely the priciest item in your skincare routine. BUT you only need a pea sized amount to cover the whole face so they last a long time. The benefits of a good serum outdo any other item in your regime. You really are getting more for your money with a serum.
